St. Edmond hosts volleyball tourney
The St. Edmond volleyball team will host their own invitational here today inside the SEHS gym.
Action in the five-team tournament begins at 8:30 a.m. with pool play. The championship match is scheduled for 1 p.m.
Joining the Gaels (0-1 overall) will be Bishop Garrigan, Southeast Valley, Aplington-Parkersburg and Van Meter.
St. Edmond will play the Jaguars first, followed by Van Meter, Aplington-Parkersburg and the Golden Bears. The top teams after pool play will play for the title.
“This is a good opportunity for us to get a lot of time in on the court,” SEHS head coach Dee Huss said. “It’s a fun tournament with different teams. We’ve been doing it for seven years and hoping to pick up more teams next year.”
The Gaels opened their season on Thursday, falling to Perry in three. Madeline Baldwin had six serving aces and was a perfect 14-for-14, while Anna Yung and Jill Salinas combined to serve 16-for-17.
“This is a great chance to get on the court and work on things we need to fix from Thursday,” Huss said.
Bishop Garrigan (0-0) and Aplington-Parkersburg (0-0) will both be opening their seasons, while Southeast Valley (1-2) and Van Meter (1-1) have already seen the court this year.
Matches will be played in the high school and elementary gyms.
