Cougars roll in opener

MANSON – The Manson Northwest Webster ground game was on full display in their season opener here Friday, as the Cougars posted a 54-26 victory over newly-formed Southeast Valley.

Senior Coy Snell rushed for 238 yards and five touchdowns for the Cougars, who were 8-3 a year ago. Quarterback Alex Bush added 132 yards on the ground and a score.

MNW racked up a total of 458 team yards on 55 carries.

”Establishing our ground game was the main objective, especially in sub-par conditions,” Cougar head coach Jeff Anliker said, referring to a steady rain that spanned nearly two full quarters of the contest. ”We feel good about what we can do running the ball this year.

”We had too many turnovers, but given the rain, we don’t want to overanalyze that. There are definitely things to clean up and fix, but this was a good start and I’m proud of our guys.”

Skyler Michalski had the other TD for the Cougars.

Snell’s scoring jaunts were from 63, 6, 10, 39 and 9 yards out.

Bush also hit Snell for the lone MNW passing touchdown. The quarterback also hit paydirt on a keeper from 63 yards out late in the third period.

Dakota Jaeschke tossed an 18-yard score to Myles Davis and also returned a fumble recovery to the end zone for Southeast Valley, which was playing its first game as a consolidated program between Prairie Valley and Southeast Webster-Grand. Davis and Aaron Swieter recorded the other Jaguar TDs.

MNW returns to action at Panorama on Friday. The Jaguars take on Eagle Grove in their home opener.
