Man pauses trip down Mississippi
BURLINGTON (AP) – An Indiana man said he paused his trip down the Mississippi River after his kayak was tampered with this week in Iowa.
John Hatch is from South Bend, Indiana, and began the journey of about 1,600 miles with his friend Larry Humphrey on Aug. 1 in Red Wing, Minnesota. The trip is to help raise money for breast cancer research.
He said after paddling for 28 miles on the river on Monday, he docked his kayak at a Burlington port. He returned the next morning to find his boat eight inches deep in water.
His sleeping bag, first aid kit and other equipment were ruined, Hatch said. One of his hatch covers is missing on his kayak.
He said he had to call Humphrey from five hours away in South Bend to pick him up.
“This is nothing major,” he said. “You can expect certain setbacks.”
