New lieutenant’s post coming to FDPD

A new lieutenant’s position will be created in the Fort Dodge Police Department under a plan introduced to the city’s Civil Service Commission Tuesday.

Whoever is promoted to the new position will lead the investigations unit, according to Acting Police Chief Kevin Doty.

Capt. Roger Porter is now in charge of that unit. Doty said Porter will be essentially working as the assistant police chief, so a new supervisor for investigations will be needed.

The Police Department now has four lieutenants, Each of them supervises a shift of patrol officers.

The commission unanimously approved a testing and interview process that should result in a new lieutenant being promoted by the end of October.

Only current members of the Fort Dodge Police Department can seek the new position. To be eligible for the testing process, an officer must have the rank of sergeant or at least seven years of experience.
