Branstad pays tribute to Friendship Haven

Gov. Terry Branstad was in Fort Dodge Wednesday to take official note of the high quality of the care provided at a major component of Friendship Haven – the John and Lin Simpson Health Center.

This 155-bed nursing facility is one of three long-term care entities selected as 2014 recipients of the Governor’s Award for Quality Care in Health Care Facilities. It is an important part of the complex of residences and health care venues that make Friendship Haven an absolutely essential part of Fort Dodge.

The award is sponsored by the Iowa Department of Inspections and Appeals. Its purpose is to recognize quality health care services “being provided to facility residents by Iowa long-term care facilities, residential care facilities and intermediate care facilities.”

Since it was created in 2001, 50 awards have been presented to 44 facilities across the Hawkeye State. It is entirely fitting that the John and Lin Simpson Health Center was selected to join this august company.

In her remarks at the award ceremony, Jennifer Crimmins, vice president of health care operations at Friendship Haven and the licensed administrator of the Simpson Health Center, explained why receiving this award is so meaningful.

“This award is about so much more than clinical quality or environmental quality,” she said. “It is about the quality of life and relationships. It’s easy to see the ‘black and white’ – the environment, the rules, the expectations, the people. And all of those things are important. But what is truly meaningful is the color – the vivid relationships that create home. One of our residents said it best, ‘They know what I want before I even know I want it.'”

The team at the Simpson Health Center – and in all the other parts of Friendship Haven – work hard to make being part of their community an experience so excellent that residents regard the decision to reside there as one of their wisest life choices.

This award is official recognition of something most Fort Dodgers already know. Friendship Haven is one of our town’s most vital assets.
