UPDATE: Jurors begin deliberations in McElroy trial

A Webster County jury has started deliberating in the first-degree murder trial of Derrick McElroy.

McElroy, 28, is accused of shooting Brandyn Preston in the neck at a bonfire party on May 8, 2011. Preston, who was paralyzed from the neck down, died eight months after the shooting.

Defense attorney Charles Kenville called two witnesses to testify before closing arguments began.

McElroy did not testify.

Jurors can find McElroy guilty of first-degree murder, second-degree murder, involuntary manslaughter or they can find him not guilty.
