DES MOINES – Second-seeded Twin Cedars advanced to the state championship game for the first time in school history, defeating third-seeded Gehlen Catholic 11-0 in five innings in the Class 1A semifinals Thursday afternoon at Principal Park.
Brent Parker had an outstanding day at the plate, going 2-for-2 with six RBIs and a run scored to lead the Sabers.
Coy Moore (11-0) pitched a two-hit shutout on six strikeouts while issuing no walks.
Twin Cedars (35-0 overall) blew the game wide open in the bottom of the first, scoring six runs. Five walks and two hits combined for the six runs, highlighted by a one-out single by Parker that plated two runs.
Twin Cedars tacked on four runs in the bottom of the fourth. With two on and no outs, Corey Harrell reached on an error, scoring Garrett Pettyjohn from second. After a Hunter Embray hit-by-pitch to load the bases, Parker cleared them with a double to deep centerfield.
Twin Cedars will take on top-seeded and defending state champion Newman Catholic (36-3) in Saturday’s Class 1A championship at Principal Park at noon.

Don Bosco 4
DES MOINES – Top-seeded Mason City Newman Catholic advanced to the state tournament finals with a walk-off 5-4 win over fourth-seeded Don Bosco in the first of two Class 1A semifinal games Thursday afternoon at Principal Park.
Don Bosco scored two runs in the top of the seventh to forge a 4-4 tie with the defending state champion Knights.
Joe Burgmeier led the bottom of the seventh off with a double for the Knights, advancing to third on a error by the left fielder on the play. After intentional walks to the next two batters to load the bases, Parker Dondlinger smacked a ball over the Don Bosco centerfielder, scoring Burgmeier to end the game.
Don Bosco (31-4 overall) trailed the entire game and was down 4-2 in the seventh. The first three batters reached base for the Dons to start the inning. Dalton Smith grounded into a 6-4 fielder’s choice, scoring Spencer Bruess, and a throwing error by Knights shortstop Jack Fitzgerald allowed the second Dons runner to cross the plate.
North Polk 6,
DES MOINES – Top-seeded North Polk beat fifth-seeded and Heart of Iowa Conference rival Roland-Story 6-2 in the first Class 2A semifinal Thursday evening at Principal Park.
The Comets scored all six runs in the first two innings, three each inning, en route to their third win this year over the Norsemen.
North Polk (31-5 overall) started the first with back-to-back singles from Grant Schlitz and Matt Cox and a walk from Reed Smith to load the bases. With two outs and the bases still loaded, Cole Jackson delivered a bases-clearing triple to give the Comets an early lead.
Grant Lang (7-1) was the winning pitcher for North Polk. Lang pitched 3.1 innings, giving up two runs on five hits, five strikeouts and four walks. Zach Brecht pitched 3.2 scoreless frames in relief for the Comets, collecting one strikeout without giving up a hit.
Zach Hovick (7-5) took the loss for Roland-Story. Hovick pitched six innings, allowing six earned runs on seven hits, three walks and six strikeouts.
North Polk advances to the Class 2A title game for the third straight year.
