Waverly-Shell Rock 3, Solon 1
DES MOINES – Top-seeded Waverly-Shell Rock escaped with a 3-1 victory over eighth-seeded Solon on Tuesday afternoon in the first of four Class 3A quarterfinal games at Principal Park.
Solon scored its lone run in the top of the seventh, and had the bases loaded and tying run on second base when the game ended.
Sean Westendorf (13-1) earned the win for the Go-Hawks, pitching six-plus innings, allowing one run on five hits, six strikeouts and three walks. Westendorf also went 2-for-3 at the dish with an RBI.
Daniel Stensland picked up the save for W-SR, needing just three pitches to strike out the final batter to end the game.
Waverly-Shell Rock (36-2 overall) scored two runs in the bottom of the second on a two-run RBI single by Stensland.
The Go-Hawks added a run in the sixth. Sky Holmgren led the inning off with a single. After a sac bunt from James Heine, Westendorf drove in Holmgren from second for a 3-0 lead.
Solon (23-16) started a two-out rally in the seventh after an infield error and a walk. Lucas Kane then recorded the Spartans’ only RBI, making the game 3-1. A single by Logan Linderbaum loaded the bases before the strikeout to end the game.
Kane went 2-for-4 at the dish to lead the Spartans.
Mitch Silberstein (7-3) took the loss for Solon. Silberstein pitched six innings, allowing three runs, two earned, on eight hits, two strikeouts and two walks.
Daven. Assumption 8, Harlan 7
DES MOINES – Behind four RBIs from Mick Baker, Davenport Assumption defeated Harlan, 8-7, in the Class 3A state quarterfinals Tuesday afternoon at Principal Park.
The Cyclones’ seventh-inning rally fell short when the tying run was thrown out at the plate to end the game.
The Knights held a 3-1 after five innings. Both teams scored four runs in the sixth for a 7-5 score. Assumption scored once in the top of the seventh and Harlan twice in the bottom of the seventh in the 8-7 thriller.
The two teams exchanged runs early in the game. Nate Gettys led off the bottom of the first for Harlan with an infield bunt single. Gettys stole second, and scored on an RBI single by Nick Tarney. Assumption responded in the top of the second with an RBI single by Connor Lindaman to drive in Baker.
Jake Gervase was hit by a pitch to lead off the third for Assumption. Gervase came around to score on an RBI single by Baker. Baker was tagged out to end the play at second base, trying to extend his single into a double.
Cale Stork tripled to right with two outs in the fourth for Harlan, but was stranded when Kyle Juhl struck out looking.
An RBI sac fly in the fifth inning to bring in Sam Bennett gave Assumption a 3-1 lead. Assumption extended its lead to 5-1 in the sixth inning on a double by Michael Alvarado, driving in Joe Morgan and Chase Hager. Baker then drove in two runs of his own on a single, bringing in Alvarado and Zach Adrian to give Assumption a 7-1 lead.
Harlan matched Assumption’s four runs by scoring four runs of its own in the bottom of the sixth inning. Stork singled to center, advanced all the way to third on a passed ball, and scored on a Mitch Kramer RBI single. Gettys tripled to right, plating Kramer and Adam Juhl. Dillon Sears then drove in Gettys on a single.
Hager extended the lead to 8-5 in the top of the seventh when he attempted to steal third base, the throw sailed into left field, and Hager came into score.
Harlan had the bases load in the bottom of the seventh with two outs. Gettys walked to drive in Stork. Sears hit an RBI single to bring in Kramer, but Kyle Juhl was tagged out trying to score the tying run to end the game.
