Late drama: Rams prevail

Third-ranked Southeast Polk ended No. 2 West Des Moines Dowling’s hopes of a second consecutive Class 5A state title Thursday night.

Katie Burdick’s two-out, walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh plated Kali Lange for a 3-2 win for the Rams (30-9 overall).

Western Kentucky signee Hannah Parker went 2-for-3 offensively for Southeast Polk, while Lange added the only other hit off Maroons’ ace Claudia Farrell.

For Dowling (29-9), Sierra Walton, Anna Albaugh and Hallie Ketcham all contributed singles. Savannah Orewiler drove in Julia Bastian with a ground out in the top of the seventh after Bastian reached on an error by the Ram shortstop.

Mississippi State recruit Cassady Knudsen (12-6) went the distance in the win, walking two and fanning 10.

Southeast Polk will meet No. 1 Johnston (36-3) in the 5A title round this evening at 7 p.m. on Mittera Field.
