Looking forward to tailgate

To the editor:

While there are lots of needs in the world, I think it’s also important to help people here in our own backyard. That’s why I’m looking forward to the Legends Tailgate on Aug. 8 at Friendship Haven.

It’s great to see how hundreds of people of all ages come to campus for this fun event. I’m looking forward to the Dueling Pianos concert, along with the game-day inspired buffet, silent auction and live auction.

All proceeds support Friendship Haven’s Good Samaritan Funds, which helps people on campus with unexpected medical costs and other expenses. It’s good to know that people who’ve worked hard all their lives but exhaust their resources after moving to campus have a safety net, if they need it.

Events like the Legends Tailgate also highlight what makes Friendship Haven such an asset to our community. Since I moved to a town home on campus last year, I’ve seen how Friendship Haven is more than a home; it’s a family.

It has been that way from the beginning, back when my grandfather contributed to Friendship Haven when Dr. Clarence Tompkins solicited funds for the organization. I always thought that if I could ever help in some way, I’d like to get involved.

That’s why I serve on Friendship Haven’s Development Committee and am proud to be a presenting sponsor of the 2014 Legends Tailgate, which runs from 6 to 10 p.m. on Aug. 8. I look forward to seeing you there.
