HELENA MARIE DODDS
LONE ROCK – Helena Marie Weisbrod Dodds, 87, passed away Sunday, July 13, 2014 at her home in rural Lone Rock. Funeral services will be held Thursday, July 17, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Algona, with visitation on Wednesday, July 16, 2014 5-8 pm, also at the church.
Helena was born in Fenton, IA to Walter and Alice Kresensky Weisbrod. She graduated from Burt High School and attended Drake University where she studied education and music. She taught school in a one-room schoolhouse in Union Township. She married James W. Dodds, March 16, 1947 at Good Hope Methodist Church and resided on the family farm in rural Lone Rock until her death.
She was previously employed by Algona Greenhouses and Wiltgen’s Jewelry and Gift World. She served as organist/pianist for multiple churches for over 70 years, including Good Hope, Burt Methodist, Fenton Methodist and First United Methodist in Algona. Music held a special place in her heart and she loved to give the gift of music to those around her whenever she found the opportunity, especially playing and singing at many weddings and funerals.
She was an active volunteer, giving of her time and talents to her churches, Good Hope United Methodist and Algona First United Methodist, Kossuth County Health Center Auxiliary, Kossuth Count Concert Association Board, Kossuth County Care Review Committee, Kossuth County Extension Council and especially enjoyed her volunteer work at the Nature Center at Smith Lake and Kossuth County Regional Health Center where she continued to volunteer until her death.She was also involved in Bel Canto, Vocal and Instrumental Promoters music program for Algona High School, United Methodist Women, Union Township Mothers and Daughters Club, the Algona Garden Club, secretary/treasurer of East Lawn Cemetery, and the election board.
Besides her music and volunteering, she enjoyed her flower gardens, floral arranging, and most of all her family.
She is survived by her children Susan (Jim) Busch of Fort Dodge, Scott of Charleston, SC and Dr. Julie (Bill) Humphrey of DeWitt, MI; grandchildren Lisa(Brian) Balm, Hailey (Fianc Tony Heck) Busch, Jamie and Alaina Humphrey, Zac Scandura, and great-grandchildren Chloe, Zoey, and Brody Balm. Also surviving are sisters Rachel (Robert) Krause of Fenton and Ruth (Don) Ohl of Long Beach, CA. She was preceded in death by husband James in 2011, daughter Penny, parents Walter and Alice Weisbrod, siblings Verona McGovern, Isabelle Weisbrod, and David Weisbrod.
