No. 2 Dodgers beat No. 3 Valley

WEST DES MOINES – The second-ranked (Class 4A) Fort Dodge softball team proved Tuesday night that size doesn’t matter, defeating No. 3 (5A) West Des Moines Valley, 3-1.

In a battle of former CIML Iowa Conference rivals, Mallory Kilian got Brooke O’Holleran to ground out with runners on second and third, giving the Dodgers (30-7 overall) their 11th win in a row.

“Mallory shut (the Tigers) down, and we made some really great plays behind her,” said FDSH head coach Andi Adams. “This was right up there with the best wins we’ve had this season. I respect Tom Bakey and the Valley program a ton. He was also very complimentary of us.”

Kilian was 2-for-3 at the plate with a single and a double, adding three strikeouts from inside the circle to improve to 15-4 on the year. junior Becca Sunken added two hits, a run scored and an RBI, while eighth-grader Madie Knutson had two hits, as well.

“It was good to see Becca and Madie step up for us,” Adams said. “(Valley) can really swing the bats. Their pitcher (Kasey Feldt) mixes her speeds and places it well, too.”

As usual, Fort Dodge relied on being aggressive to score. Sunken plated the first run in the fifth after reaching on an infield single. She came around to score on an error with two outs.

In the sixth, Riley Hartman scored from second on a hit by Sunken after coming in to run for Kilian. Maddie Egli added an insurance run later in the inning off a second Valley (24-11) error.

For the Tigers, Mandi Roemmich was 3-for-3, while O’Holleran added two hits. Kilian’s lone mistake was in the sixth when Anna Gernant launched a solo home run. Kilian earlier escaped a bases-loaded one-out jam.

The Dodgers close out their regular season Thursday at Marshalltown (3-31) in a makeup CIC Northern Division doubleheader. In their previous meeting this season, Fort Dodge swept the Bobcats by scores of 2-0 and 8-1.
