Two dead in Graettinger house fire
GRAETTINGER – Two children died Monday as the result of injuries sustained in a house fire in Graettinger.
Gavin Hasbrouck, 5, and Collin Reed, 7, were pronounced dead at Palo Alto County Hospital, according to a press release from the Palo Alto Sheriff’s Office.
According to the release, at 6:33 a.m. Monday, the sheriff’s office received a report of a house fire at 204 S. Jackson Ave. in Graettinger.
Stephanie Gaston, 27, an occupant of the house, was able to exit, but was unable to bring her children, Hasbrouck and Reed, to safety. Members of the Graettinger Fire Department entered the smoke-filled house and were able to locate and remove the two children, at which point firefighters and Palo Alto County ambulance personnel began lifesaving measures.
Gaston, Hasbrouck and Reed were transported to Palo Alto County Hospital. Gaston was later transported to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City. Her condition was not released Monday.
Preliminary investigation indicates the fire started in the living room of the house. The Iowa State Fire Marshal’s office will continue to investigate the fire.
