Dodgers crowned Linn-Mar champs
MARION – The third-ranked (Class 4A) Fort Dodge softball team claimed top honors at the Linn-Mar Invitational here Saturday.
The Dodgers (23-7 overall) wrapped up an unbeaten 4-0 weekend with victories over Linn-Mar (7-5) and No. 14 (4A) Waverly-Shell Rock (9-2).
“We did an awesome job,” said FDSH head coach Andi Adams. “We had so many coaches compliment us on how aggressive and fun we were to watch.”
Junior Mallory Kilian, a University of Northern Iowa recruit, went a perfect 3-for-3 offensively with two triples, two runs scored and a RBI against the Lions. Lexi Astor also delivered two hits and two runs, while Maddie Egli and Madi Bennett each added doubles.
“Our top of the order really came through for us,” Adams said. “It was such an intense game. Linn-Mar can really hit the ball.”
In the championship game, Meagan Hartman was 3-for-4 with three doubles for Fort Dodge. Kilian and Astor chipped in two hits apiece, while Bennett recorded a double.
One of Kilian’s hits was her eighth longball of the season and the 19th of her career.
Hartman (7-3) and Kilian (11-4) both posted wins in the circle. Kilian went the distance against the Go-Hawks, allowing just four hits with nine strikeouts. Waverly-Shell Rock was coming off a 4-3 upset over fifth-ranked (4A) Cedar Rapids Xavier.
“Our pitchers will say they’re only as good as our defense (FDSH committed no errors for a second straight day),” said Adams.
The Dodgers return to CIC Northern Division play Monday at Marshalltown. Fort Dodge swept the Bobcats in their earlier meeting this year.
