Pet Central to open its doors Thursday
Pet Central, Everything Pet Boutique opens Thursday. The new Central Avenue shop offers pet supplies, food and more.
“We’re going to have some home decor and stuff geared towards pet lovers, with pet sayings on them and different animals on them. Fun collars, some leashes, treats you can’t get at places,” Amy Collins-Lumpp, store owner, said. “Everything we’re going to carry as far as food and treats is made in the U.S., kind of the upper bracket of your treats that are a little bit healthier for your pet.”
The store will also feature locally made goods.
“We’re letting people do consignment in our store, that way we can get things that are locally made here in Fort Dodge and give people the opportunity to have a place to sell them. And it will all be pet-related,” Collins-Lumpp said. “We’ve got some neckties, bandanas, locally made collars and bowls.”
The business is the second for Collins-Lumpp, who also operates Paw Prints in Fort Dodge, which offers home pet care.
“There’s just nothing really close to here as far as getting some of the specialty stuff you want to for your pet,” she said. “I know a lot of people will drive to Ankeny, Des Moines, to go to PetSmart, PetCo, things like that. We were just wanting to have a store with things you can’t just buy at Target or Walmart, more of the specialty boutique-type things.”
Collins-Lumpp said she loves pets.
“I’ve always worked with animals. I worked at a veterinary hospital as an assistant. My husband, who is opening the store with me, he’s on the board of directors at the animal shelter. We have many pets of our own,” she said. “It’s just a passion.”
Readying the store for its June opening has been a challenge, Collins-Lumpp said.
“We’ve put a lot of time into there, trying to get it situated,” she said. “It’s a small space, but we’re going to try and have as much stuff in there as we can starting out.”
Thursday will only be a soft opening, though.
“We’ve got a bunch more inventory coming in that won’t get here until mid-July, so we’ll do a grand opening then,” Collins-Lumpp said. “We’ve had a lot people who keep asking, are you open? So we’re going to open our doors with what we’ll have as of next week, and tell people we’re going to have a whole lot more coming in July.”
Pets, of course, are always welcome at Pet Central.
“We want people to bring their pets in,” Collins-Lumpp said. “Through the summer we’re going to be selling frozen yogurt for dogs in the store, and we have frozen yogurt-filled marrow bones, as well.”
