Four area counties declared disasters
Gov. Terry Branstad issued a proclamation of disaster emergency Friday for Kossuth, Palo Alto, Sac and Wright counties.
That move allows state resources to be used to help communities recover from flooding in the wake of heavy rains on Monday and Tuesday.
Additionally, the governor activated the Iowa Individual Assistance Program for Kossuth County.
That program provides grants of up to $5,000 for households that meet income guidelines. The grants can be used to pay for home or vehicle repairs, replacement of clothing or food, and to secure temporary housing. Applications are available on the Iowa Department of Human Services website.
Branstad issued a proclamation of disaster emergency for Pocahontas County on Tuesday. State Department of Transportation workers delivered 10,000 sandbags to that county.
According to an announcement from Branstad’s office, state officials have asked the Federal Emergency Management Agency to conduct damage assessments in all the counties for which he has issued a disaster proclamation. Such assessments are a preliminary step toward seeking a presidential disaster declaration.
