One killed when car hits bikes
MANSON – One man is dead and another injured after their bicycles were struck during an accident in Manson Friday morning.
Shawn Gosch, 47, of Onawa, was pronounced dead after being taken to Pocahontas Community Hospital.
Gosch and Jeffrey Gray, 49, also of Onawa, were riding their bikes in the westbound lane of Iowa Highway 7 at 8:38 a.m. when they were struck from behind by a car, Iowa State Patrol Lt. Kelly Hindman said in a written statement.
The 1992 Chevrolet Caprice was operated by Eric Meyer, 30, of Lake View.
The accident happened six miles west of Manson.
“The driver was unable to avoid contact and struck the rear bicycle of Shawn Gosch,” Hindman said. “The chain reaction collision then impacted the bicycle of Jeffrey Gray, throwing him into the north ditch.”
Gray was taken to Trinity Regional Medical Center where he was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
Both men were wearing helmets.
Hindman said the incident remains under investigation by Trooper Neil Morenz.
The Calhoun County Sheriff’s Department, Calhoun County EMS, Manson Fire Department, Manson Police Department, Manson Ambulance and Pomeroy Police Department also assisted on scene.
