Maroons overpower FDSH softball team

WEST DES MOINES – The third-ranked (Class 4A) Fort Dodge softball team had no answers for No. 3 (5A) West Des Moines Dowling Wednesday night, dropping both ends of a doubleheader.

Scores were 12-0 and 11-1.

Lexi Astor collected two hits in the opener for the Dodgers (13-5 overall), while Bre Ulrich added a single.

The defending state champion Maroons (12-5) racked up 11 hits, including four for extra bases. Julia Bastian and Savannah Orewiler each went deep for the home team.

“Even the singles (Dowling) hit were hard,” said FDSH head coach Andi Adams. “It didn’t matter how we pitched them, they just seemed to always find the gaps.”

In the second contest, Maddie Egli, Madi Bennett, Mallory Kilian, Toryn Pederson and Ulrich all recorded hits for Fort Dodge, which plated its lone run in the fourth.

Bastian was a perfect 3-for-3 with a single, a double and a homer for Dowling. Olivia Walton added a grand slam and a two-run shot, while Anna Albaugh also connected on a longball.

“Our defense really did a phenomenal job of making all the plays, but we played a phenomenal team,” Adams said. “We have some great teams coming in this weekend, too, so we have to keep our composure and dust ourselves off.”

Looking to bounce back, Fort Dodge hosts its own invitational on Friday and Saturday.
