North Union ends Gaels’ softball streak

SWEA CITY – The seventh-ranked (Class 2A) St. Edmond softball team suffered a 3-2 nine-inning setback to No. 10 (2A) North Union on Tuesday.

Dena Looft’s walkoff RBI single to right-center field brought home Taylor Mathine with the winning run for the Warriors (10-3 overall).

Gael ace Amanda Lansman was knocked out of the game one batter earlier after taking a line drive just below her knee. Lansman (15-2) allowed just three hits, while striking out six over 8 2/3 innings of work.

“I thought we played fairly well, but it took us a couple times through the order to make some adjustments,” said SEHS head coach Paul Hunt. “(Peyton) Oleson had a really good changeup.”

Maggie Harvey went 2-for-3 at the plate for the Gaels (15-2), including her third longball of the year in the sixth inning. Jaci Stumpf and Cassie Sells each added doubles.

With the loss, St. Edmond saw its 12-game winning streak snapped.

Looking to bounce back, the Gaels host North Central Conference rival Humboldt (11-3) tonight.
