Dodgers complete softball sweep
MASON CITY – The third-ranked (Class 4A) Fort Dodge softball team downed Mason City by a 7-3 final here Tuesday afternoon in the completion of a suspended game.
After falling behind early, the Dodgers (13-3 overall, 4-0 CIC Northern Division) pulled away from the Mohawks (6-10, 1-5) behind a five-run fourth inning.
Senior Lexi Astor went 3-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored and a stolen base for FDSH, while junior Mallory Kilian contributed a single, a double, two runs, two RBI and a stolen base.
“Mallory’s on fire right now,” said Fort Dodge head coach Andi Adams. “She’s really in a groove. Lexi came up with some clutch hits as well.”
Seniors Maddie Bodholdt and Maddie Egli and freshman Meagan Hartman all drove in runs for the Dodgers. Egli, Lani Van Zyl and Becca Sunken each scored once.
Hartman (4-1) posted the win in relief, allowing no hits and two earned runs over three innings.
Fort Dodge outhit Mason City, 10-8. Both teams committed two errors.
“What we do well is the smallball game, so we need to go back to our gameplan,” Adams said. “(Tuesday) we really worked on letting the ball get deep enough (into the strike zone). We were able to get everyone into the game, too, which was nice.”
Winners of four straight games, the Dodgers visit defending state champion and No. 3 (5A) West Des Moines Dowling tonight. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m.
