FD City Council sets cleanup deadline
A Fort Dodge homeowner was given a deadline for cleaning up the remainder of a large amount of trash that once was on her property.
The City Council, acting Monday as the Board of Health, directed Shawn George, the nuisance and rental property inspector, to make a list of everything that needs to be cleaned up at 827 Sixth Ave. N. After she receives that list, the property owner, Rhonda Hauge, will have 48 hours to remove everything on it.
City officials have been working to get that property cleaned up since early May. City Manager David Fierke said 75 percent to 80 percent of the garbage has been removed.
George checked the property just before the council meeting Monday evening and confirmed that ”a good majority of it is gone.”
Hauge addressed the council and said that none of the material left on her property poses a health hazard.
Also on Monday, the council gave an individual who purchased property from the city at 1229 Second Ave. N. more time to complete the improvements he promised to do when he bought the building in November 2010.
The council voted 5-1 to give Monte Kraft until the end of July to finish the work. He was initially given one year to finish fix up the property.
The building he bought from the city is a four-unit apartment house. He has invested $10,000 in it, according to Vickie Reeck, the city’s community development director. The city acquired the property after it was abandoned.
Councilmen Kim Alstott, Andy Fritz, Dean Hill, Terry Moehnke and Don Wilson voted yes.
Councilman Jeffrey Halter voted no, saying that Kraft should have complied with the terms of the deal he made when he bought the property.
Councilman Dave Flattery was absent.
