No. 8 Gaels lose to No. 3 Lions

CLEAR LAKE – The eighth-ranked (Class 2A) St. Edmond baseball team suffered an 8-1 setback to defending state champion and No. 3 (3A) Clear Lake on Monday night.

Leadoff batter Colin Flattery sparked the Gaels (6-4 overall, 3-2 North Central Conference) offensively with a 2-for-4 effort and a run scored.

Robert Flattery, Hank Crimmins, Jason Setterdahl, Ryan Szalat and Logan Fear each contributed singles for SEHS. Reid Johnson added a RBI.

“We left 10 guys on base and just weren’t consistent at the plate,” said St. Edmond head coach Joe Shanks. “In the first inning, we loaded the bases and hit into a 3-2-3 double play. We had another guy thrown out at the plate on a base hit.”

Setterdahl (1-2) went the distance in the loss, surrendering 12 hits and seven earned runs. Setterdahl walked two and fanned nine.

“Jason had his offspeed stuff working well, but when (the Lions) hit the ball they drove it,” Shanks said. “We had some mental lapses on defense (the Gaels committed three errors) and threw the ball around a little bit.”

For the Lions (9-1, 3-0), Mitch Keeran hit a pair of doubles. Brandon Tofte chipped in a two-bagger of his own.

Brock Adams worked all seven innings for Clear Lake, allowing seven hits with two walks and10 strikeouts.

Next game for St. Edmond is Wednesday at Webster City.
