Gaels lose at CYO tourney
CARROLL – The sixth-ranked (Class 2A) St. Edmond baseball team dropped a 9-1 decision to No. 9 (1A) Remsen St. Mary’s at the CYO Tournament on Saturday.
Jason Setterdahl, a sophomore, collected the only two hits for the Gaels (5-3 overall) with a pair of singles. Setterdahl drove in Robert Flattery with the lone SEHS run in the fifth
“We faced their No. 1 pitcher (Matt Wesselmann), who is a senior and threw the ball well,” said St. Edmond head coach Joe Shanks. “I don’t think we hit as well as we can or should, though. We didn’t really get anything started and struck out seven times.”
The Hawks (10-1) plated at least one run in four different innings, including four in the sixth. Brady Harpenau led the way offensively for defending state quarterfinalist RSM with two doubles.
Starter Daman Perry (0-1) took the loss on the mound.
“It was the first time on the hill varsity-wise for our two young guys, but Daman and Reid (Johnson) went out and challenged hitters,” Shanks said. “We thought we had plenty of pitching depth going into the season, but we’re a little strapped right now with Matthew Bocken out with a sprained ankle.”
St. Edmond will meet either Bishop Garrigan or top-ranked (3A) Sioux City Heelan here this afternoon at 1 p.m.
