FD baseball wins twice

MASON CITY – The 10th-ranked (Class 4A) Fort Dodge baseball team stayed on a roll with two more victories at the Mason City Invitational on Saturday.

The Dodgers (9-1 overall) prevailed over Sioux City East and Sioux City North by scores of 10-6 and 7-4, respectively.

Cory Alexander went 2-for-3 offensively with a triple and a RBI in the opener for FDSH, which plated runs in four different innings.

Iowa Central recruit JC Hatcher (3-0) posted the win on the mound, striking out 11 over six-plus innings of work.

“JC was dealing and took a no-hitter through the sixth,” said Fort Dodge head coach Blake Utley. “He gave up two hits then in the seventh and got pulled out. JC set the tone from the get-go on the mound, which is always so important.”

Against the Stars, Cainen Hiracheta went a perfect 2-for-2 at the plate. Alexander added a pair of RBI.

Sam Kolacia (2-0) pitched the first 6 2/3 innings for the victory. Andrew Stover notched the last out for his first save of the year.

“Kolacia looked good, too,” Utley said. “He really complements JC well by being able to throw three pitches for strikes. You can be a really good high school pitcher by doing that.”

Fort Dodge banged out 18 hits on the day, while commiting six errors.

“We were ahead big in both games, but our pitchers aren’t in midseason form yet and got a little bit fatigued,” said Utley. “More importantly, we were able to get out of the innings and still get two wins. Sioux City North’s middle of the lineup is the best I’ve seen in awhile.”

Next outing for the Dodgers is Monday when they host Marshalltown for their CIC Northern Division opener.
