County attorney won’t seek office
Webster County Attorney Cori Kuhn Coleman has announced that she will withdraw her name from the November ballot.
Following Coleman’s announcement, Jennifer Benson, who has served as first assistant Webster County attorney since June 2013, said she plans to run for the job.
“I’m seeking the Democratic nomination to replace Cori on the ballot,” Benson said.
For that to happen, the Webster County Democrats will need to convene a county convention and nominate Benson as Coleman’s replacement.
Coleman was appointed Webster County attorney in June 2013. She had served as first assistant Webster County attorney under Ricki Osborn, who resigned to take over a private practice.
Coleman said in an email Saturday that she and her family plan to move back to Des Moines to be closer to their family.
In a written statement, Coleman said, “I am grateful for the opportunity I was given to do the work I love most, which is seeking justice on behalf of the citizens of Webster County. I am also grateful for the opportunity to have worked with the dedicated members of law enforcement, the board of supervisors and the many county entities I have advised.
“I will continue to uphold the duties I was appointed for until the end of my term,” she wrote.
A 2005 graduate of Drake University, Coleman has been with the Webster County attorney’s office since 2006 when she joined the staff as an assistant attorney. In 2009, she was named second assistant and was promoted to first assistant in February 2013.
Benson began her work as assistant Webster County attorney on July 15, 2011, one day after she stepped down as Humboldt County attorney, a position she had held since November 2006.
Beginning in August 2005, Benson spent one year as a law clerk for the Second Judicial District of Iowa and was based in Webster County.
“I know my experience would benefit the office,” Benson said. ‘I’m excited for the opportunity to serve the county,” adding that she sees the move “as a natural progression.”
