Dodgers score 33 runs in sweep

DES MOINES – The 10th-ranked Fort Dodge baseball team cruised to a doubleheader sweep over Des Moines Roosevelt on Wednesday night.

The Dodgers (7-1 overall) outscored the Roughriders 33-6 in 12-3 and 21-3 victories.

“We talk about being aggressive at the plate,” said Fort Dodge head coach Blake Utley. “We took advantage of the opportunties they gave us.

“We didn’t play perfectly, so we have some things to clean up and get ready for the weekend.”

Senior Andrew Stover, coming off of state team tennis, picked up the victory in the opening contest. The Dodger senior who also finished fifth in state doubles, went 4-for-4 with a run in the opening contest. Stover also went 2-for-4 in the second contest.

“Andrew had a solid day, coming back for us after state tennis,” Utley said. “He has been juggling a lot and he stepped right back on the field.

“He’s a very competitive person.”

Cainen Hiracheta was 2-for-5 with two RBI and Sam Kolacia was 2-for-5 with three runs driven in. He also drove in two runs.

In the second contest the Dodgers had an impressive fifth inning where they scored 16 runs.

Drew Hansen (1-0) earned his first varsity win in the nightcap.

“It was huge for Drew to get his first win,” Utley said. “We look forward to him getting better and being a key contributor.”

Sam Cook led the Dodgers at the plate, going 3-for-4. Cory Alexander was 2-for-3.

JC Hatcher and Alexander drove in three runs each. Johnny Bice had two RBI.

The Dodgers are back in action on Saturday when they travel to Mason City for an invitiational. They’ll face Sioux City East at 12:30 p.m. and Sioux City North at 5:30 p.m.
