Dodgers finish 4th
ANKENY – The Fort Dodge boys tennis squad concluded their season with a fourth-place showing at team state here Tuesday.
The Dodgers lost in the semifinals to eventual champion Iowa City West, 5-0, before falling to West Des Moines Valley in the consolation final, 5-2.
Senior Andrew Stover and junior Rob Leigh picked up singles wins for Fort Dodge vs. the Tigers, as Stover earned a straight-set victory over Tommy Maigaard, while Leigh downed JJ Micka in three.
“Our match with West Des Moines Valley was a close one that just didn’t go our way,” FDSH head coach Jared Feddersen said. “We needed to play some of our best tennis at every spot in the lineup to win, and we came up a little short.”
The other two remaining doubles matches were not finished because Valley had reached the required five wins to seal the deal.
Over the weekend, Brian Murman placed sixth at state individuals, while Stover and freshman Jon Bowser took fifth in doubles.
Iowa City West’s David DiLeo and Karl Wenzel were doubles champions, with Adam Dellos and Trent Schneider finishing third. West also had state singles runner-up Blake Oelting and fourth place finisher Jiung Jung playing for them.
“We knew our semifinal match was going to be tough sledding, knowing what Iowa City West was capable of,” Feddersen said. “Even so, I felt that we competed well in a few of the singles matches.”
Stover was the lone senior in Fort Dodge’s varsity lineup.
The Dodgers were making their fifth appearance at team state and first since 2009. They finished fourth that year as well.
“A fourth-place finish is an accomplishment that we are very pleased with and much of the credit goes to our graduating senior, Andrew Stover,” Feddersen said. “Andrew has been a tremendous leader for our program and has delivered some of his best tennis these last few weeks.”
West defeated Linn-Mar in the finals, 5-2.
