Dodgers keep the ball rolling

Fort Dodge has made shutout softball a habit early in the season.

Waterloo East was the latest Dodger victim here Monday night.

Posting its fifth shutout in six games, No. 5 (Class 4A) Fort Dodge (6-0 overall) blanked the Trojans by an 8-0 count at Rogers Sports Complex to remain unbeaten.

Junior Mallory Kilian (4-0) went the distance in the circle for the Dodgers, allowing just one hit. The University of Northern Iowa commit walked four and fanned a career-high 14.

Kilian retired the side in order four different times, while striking out the last seven batters she faced.?A No. 3 batter in the lineup, she also helped her own cause with a 2-for-3 offensive effort, including a two-run longball to deep center field in the third inning – Kilian’s third home run of the year and 14th of her career.

“Mallory did a little of everything,” FDSH head coach Andi Adams said. “She was just in a great rhythm (last night) after getting some good rest on Sunday.”

After going down quietly in their opening at-bat, the Dodgers broke through in the second on a RBI single from senior Maddie Egli, bringing home Madi Bennett. FDSH later tacked on three insurance tallies in the third and two more in both the fourth and fifth frames.

Senior Lexi Astor and Egli each delivered RBI groundouts. Cassie Tjebben crossed the dish on a successful double steal with Bre Ulrich.

Both Ulrich and courtesy runner Toryn Pederson scored on a wild pitch and throwing error, respectively.

“We’ve been hitting the ball so well, and our girls are very focused right now,” said Adams. “This (6-0 start) is where I thought we’d be at this point in the season. We’re taking it one pitch, one out, one inning and one game at a time. Momentum is a cruel mistress, though, and can shift on a dime.”

Lani Van Zyl notched a pair of runs and a stolen base for the Dodgers, while Tjebben and Ulrich swiped two bags apiece. Becca Sunken added a run scored.

Seven different Fort Dodge players had at least one hit in the contest.

Ashley Kubik singled up the middle with two outs in the first for the lone Trojan hit. East (2-3) actually loaded the bases with two outs in the fourth, but Kilian escaped the jam by inducing Dion Shirley into a harmless ground ball to second baseman Bennett.

“Mallory has a lot of confidence in our defense making all the plays behind her (the Dodgers were errorless for the third straight game on Monday),” Adams said. “We’ve been having very high-pressure, intensity-filled practices and doing many different drills to prepare us for those types of stressful situations.”

The Dodgers have now outscored their foes on the year by a combined margin of 55-6.

Next action for FDSH is Wednesday at Carroll Kuemper.
