Esther L. Theiss, 93, of Fort Dodge, died Sunday, June 1, 2014, at the Fort Dodge Villa Care Center.

A service honoring Esther’s life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, June 4, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church with the Rev. Lyle Hansen officiating. Interment will be in North Lawn Cemetery. The visitation is 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. Arrangements have been entrusted to Gunderson Funeral Home & Cremation Services. Memorials may be directed to the discretion of the family or to Good Shepherd Lutheran Church.

Esther Louise Krengel was born to Rev. William and Hilda (Meyer) Krengel on February 24, 1921, in Didsbury, Alberta, Canada. She grew up in Marion, North Dakota where she helped raise her four younger siblings upon the early death of her mother. Esther moved to Fort Dodge in 1943 to live with her aunt. She was employed at Collins-Beier Paint Store. She worshiped her Lord at St. Pauls Lutheran Church where she met Wilmer Theiss, also a member. They were active in church choir and Walther League. Esther and Wilmer were married on April 28, 1946 and resided on the Theiss family farm. They were charter members of Bethel Lutheran Church, now Good Shepherd, where Esther served as organist and church secretary for many years.

Esther is survived by her daughters, Renee (David) Ray, Fort Dodge; Karen (Larry) Ryan Hulbert, Des Moines; grandchildren, Aaron Ray, Fort Dodge; Jennifer (Brendan) Sapienza, Minneapolis, Minn.; Angela (Tim) Huckaby, Des Moines; Kelli Ryan, Los Angeles, Calif.; great-grandchildren, Jack Huckaby, Frances Huckaby and Madison Huckaby; sister Rhoda Marquoit, Danville, Calif.; and sister-in-law Vera Krengel. Esther was preceded in death by her parents, brothers, Paul, Rev. George and Ronald, sister Jeanette York and son-in-law Rod Ryan.

Esther will be remembered for her gentle spirit and her ready smile. She lovingly served her Lord, her family and her church.
