Garrigan out in front of 1A field

MARSHALLTOWN – Bishop Garrigan has set itself up for a shot at the Class 1A state golf championship after a strong Day 1.

The Golden Bears shot a 308 and lead the field by 13 strokes. Riverside, Oakland (321) is second, followed by Grundy Center (325).

Newell-Fonda is sixth after a round of 334.

Alta-Aurelia sophomore Josh McCormick leads the individual race after firing a 70. Central Decatur’s Noah Simon is second after a 73.

Bishop Garrigan junior Jess Marlow and sophomore Andrew Lallier both shot 76’s and are in a four-way tie for eighth after shooting the fifth best scores of the day.

Freshman Logan Caspesius shot a 77 and classmate Donovan Berte fired a 79. Sophomore Zach Boelter (83) and senior Michael Berke (84) also competed for the Golden Bears.

Newell-Fonda’s Brady Dicks led the Mustangs with a 78. Jason Hess (83), Ben Lindstrom (86) and Luke Koster (87) are the other counters for Newell-Fonda.

Laurens-Marathon’s Devin Grossnickle shot an 82 for the Chargers.

Today’s final round will tee off at 8 a.m.
