Dodger tennis players stay in contention
CEDAR RAPIDS – It wasn’t the start that the Fort Dodge tennis team hoped for at state, but both entrants are still alive in the Class 2A field.
Junior Brian Murman lost his opening round match, but bounced back on the consolation side.
Freshman Jon Bowser and senior Andrew Stover also suffered a first round loss and also advanced with two consolation victories.
“Our day started with some tough draws,” said Fort Dodge head coach Jared Feddersen. “If you look at the bracket, the players we lost tough matches to in the first round then cruised to the semis. I had no doubt that our guys would bounce back and be hungry to keep playing.”
Murman (16-3) fell in his first-round match to third-seed Blake Oetting of Iowa City West, 6-2 and 6-2. The junior then bounced back with a 7-6 (7-4), 6-0 victory over Shaan Medhan of West Des Moines Valley.
Murman defeated Dubuque Hempstead’s Jeff Teng 7-5, 2-6, 1-0 (6). He’ll now face Lewis Central’s Caleb Shudak in the consolation semifinals.
“Brian had a solid second match and then played a tough third match against a player we didn’t know much about from Dubuque Hiempstead,” Feddersen said.
Bowser and Stover (14-1) suffered their first loss of the season as the No. 3 seed. They dropped their opener to Iowa City West’s David DiLeo and Karl Wenzel, 6-2 and 6-3.
In the first round of consolation they knocked off Waukee’s Mac Deisol and Sandeep Yeturu, 6-2 and 6-1.
The Dodger duo knocked off Jarrett Benson and Matt Triplett of Dowling in consolation second round. They won 6-1 and 6-2.
“Jon and Andrew really played solid tennis in the consolation bracket and took care fo two quality CIML tandems that they had seen before during the season,” Feddersen said.
The FDSH tandem will now face Norwalk’s Austin LaVelle and Grant Wright in today’s consolation semifinals. Bowser and Stover and Murman can finish as high as fifth place.
Action will pick up today at 9:30 a.m. at Veteran’s Memorial Tennis Center with semifinals on both the championship and consolation brackets.
