Cowgirls make state

MILFORD – Behind a second-place showing, the Clarion-Goldfield girls golf team advanced to the Class 3A state tournament here Tuesday.

The Cowgirls shot a 381, moving on as a team. Unity Christian was the Region 1 champion with a 362.

Mikaela Livengood finished second overall, firing an 82. East Sac County’s Makayla Ernst also advanced with an 82.

The Raiders placed third as a team, shooting a 413.

Other counters for Clarion-Goldfield were Hope Polzin (95), Jennalee Hinkle (101) and Cassie Hanson (103).

“We haven’t been to state since 2008,” C-G head coach Dan Smith said. “It feels pretty awesome that we’re one of the final eight teams left in 3A.”

The state tournament is set for June 2-3 in Ames at the Ames Golf and Country Club. Joining Unity Christian and Clarion-Goldfield will be Carroll Kuemper, Atlantic, Nevada, Mid-Prairie, Clear Lake and Dyersville Beckman.

Garrigan qualifies as regional champs

HARTLEY – Behind Alexa Capesius’ round of 79, the Bishop Garrigan girls golf team claimed another regional title and berth at the state tournament.

The Golden Bears fired a 398, besting Akron-Westfield by three strokes in a Class 1A, Region 1 tournament.

Capesius was the meet-medalist, while teammate Emily Marlow finished fourth with a 98.

West Bend-Mallard’s Jennalyn Thul also moved on to the state meet as an individual qualifier thanks to her third place finish and 95.

Other team qualifiers include Newell-Fonda, Guthrie Center, New London, Victor-HLV, Grundy Center and Clarksville.

The 1A state tournament is June 2-3 in Marshalltown at the American Legion Golf Course.

Wildcats, Lynx at regionals

WAVERLY – The Humboldt and Webster City girls golf teams competed in a Class 4A, Region 3 tournament here Tuesday at Waverly Municipal Golf Course.

The Wildcats placed fifth with a 386, while the Lynx were ninth with a 403.

Cedar Rapids Xavier and Charles City both advanced to state, which takes place June 2-3 in Ames at the Ames Golf and Country Club.

Regional title for Newell-Fonda

GRISWOLD – Jade Hess and Abby Christensen kept the state tournament streak of Newell-Fonda going, as the Mustangs qualified for the Class 1A tournament in golf.

Newell-Fonda shot a 389, winning a 1A, Region 2 crown here Tuesday at the Griswold Golf and Country Club. Hess was meet medalist with a 90, while Christensen finished second with a 93.

The Mustangs advanced alongside Guthrie Center from the regional. Other team qualifiers are Bishop Garrigan, Akron-Westfield, New London, Victor-HLV, Grundy Center and Clarksville.

Southeast Webster-Grand finished fourth overall with a 448.

The 1A state tournament is June 2-3 in Marshalltown at the American Legion Golf Course.

E-Hawks come up short

EAGLE GROVE – The Emmetsburg girls golf team placed third here Tuesday in a Class 3A, Region 3 meet, missing out on a berth at state.

Dike-New Hartford and Alta/Aurelia advanced, with the E-Hawks firing a team total of 385.

The 2A state tournament is June 2-3 in Marshalltown at the American Legion Golf Course.
