Dodger boys advance in soccer

BOONE – The Fort Dodge boys soccer team saved their best for last here Tuesday evening in a Class 3A, Substate 2 quarterfinal against Boone, advancing past the Toreadors in penalty kicks.

The Dodgers (5-12 overall) will now face No. 1 (3A) Johnston (17-0) on Thursday in the semifinals. Earlier this year, the Dragons earned a 1-0 victory over FDSH.

After Alex Jackson’s second half free-kick goal from 24 yards out tied it at 1-1, Fort Dodge and the Toreadors (7-8) played to a draw through the remainder of regulation and two overtime sessions.

That brought the match to penalty kicks, and Dodger goal Ethan Schwendemann recorded the game-winning save after goals from Connor Allison and Brady Read.

“This was just a solid collective team effort,” FDSH head coach Pablo Rodriguez said. “We were solid on defense, and I thought both Michael Olson and Troy Brandt really took leadership out there for us.”

In the regular season meeting between the Dodgers and Dragons, Elvir Ibisevic had the lone goal. Schwendemann made 15 saves in the match.

The Fort Dodge/Johnston winner moves on to a substate final in Johnston on Saturday against either No. 15 Southeast Polk or Marshalltown.
