Four-Bal champs crowned

Pocahontas native J.D. Anderson teamed with Bret Taylor to claim the 19th annual Iowa Golf Association Four-Ball championship in the open division at the Fort Dodge Country Club on Saturday.

Anderson, from Johnston, and Taylor, of Des Moines, fired an eight-under par 63 to edge Fort Dodge Senior High graduate Colin Pearson and Tanner Kesterson by a single stroke. The tandem finished at 13-under for the two-day best ball event to prevail.

Pearson, a University of San Diego recruit who just finished at Indian Hills, and Kesterson, a current member of the Oklahoma State University squad, were also at 13-under heading into the par-four 17th, but a costly bogey dashed their chances.

Gowrie’s Nate Schill and Lucas Boyd tied for third at 9-under. Andrew Huseman – the son of Fort Dodge businessman Bill Huseman – and Griffen Matthias were also in that cluster.

Bob Brummel (Orange City) and Todd Sapp (Sioux City) captured the senior crown. The duo recorded five birdies, an eagle and no bogeys to rally their way to the top with a seven-under par 64.

The 10-under total was three strokes clear of Jim Curell (Boone) and Joe Palmer (West Des Moines) in the final senior standings. Defending champs Tom Schill (Gowrie) and David Studer (West Des Moines) placed third.

A total of 72 teams were involved in the event and treated to near-perfect conditions both days.
