Herman Valentine Olson passed away at the age of 94. His last moments of his life were spent in the arms of the love of his life, Bernice. They have been married just short of 70 years.

Herman was born in Fort Dodge, Iowa on February 14, 1920 to Esther and Herman Olson. He graduated from Fort Dodge Senior High School in 1939 and served as Staff Sergeant in the US Army Air Force in the South Pacific from 1942-1946. On June 15, 1944 he married Bernice Irene Osmanson and they were blessed with two sons, Gary John in 1945 and Dennis Eugene in 1950.

Herman is survived by his wife Bernice, sons Gary (Toni in Omaha, Nebraska) and Dennis (Cheri in Long Grove, Iowa); grandchildren, Jay Olson (Jaquii), Tiffany Koenen (Matt) and Christopher Olson (Kirsten); and six great-grandchildren, Lucy, April and Ben Olson, and Caden, Carson and Abriel Koenen.

He was preceded in death by his parents, 4 brothers: Richard, Leroy, Kenneth and a twin brother Winfred.

Herm was employed by Tobin Meat Packing, Osmanson and Olson Phillips 66 and Jim’s Phillips 66 Service stations in Fort Dodge.

He loved to golf and was proud of his two holes in one. He was active in his church, First Presbyterian, serving as deacon and elder. He also was active in the Kiwanis and Elks in Fort Dodge, Iowa.

Visitation will be at Gunderson Funeral Home on Tuesday, May 27, 2014 from 4:30 – 7:00 PM. Funeral service will be held at First Presbyterian Church on Wednesday, May 28 at 11:00 AM. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Military honors will be presented by V.F.W. Post No. 1856 and the Iowa Army National Guard.
