Algona boys win distance medley crown

DES MOINES – Second place was never an option for the Algona boys distance medley Friday at the state track meet inside Drake Stadium.

Competing in the 3A field, the Bulldog quartet of sophomore Keagan Zwiefel, senior Jeremy Rurup, junior Esden Carroll and junior Bo Hjelle earned gold in a time of 3:30.65. Fort Madison (3:31.77) settled for a runner-up performance.

“I was just trying to go out fast, and I felt exhilarated by the crowd,” said Hjelle, who ran a 1:55.60 anchor leg. “I was two seconds off my (personal record).”

Algona came in seeded second at 3:39.84. Earlier this year, the Bulldogs actually posted the top 3A mark at 3:29.98.

“The biggest thing was getting all our handoffs down,” Rurup said. “(Winning a title) is pretty exciting since this was my first time down (at Drake Stadium) and my last race ever.”

Junior Joe Teague was also fifth in the shot put (50-0) for Algona. Dalton Ferguson (60-0.75) of Solon secured top honors.

Beginning the last day of state action, the Bulldogs are now tied with Waukon for fifth in the 3A team race with 20 points. Center Point (25.5) leads the way.
