Garrigan girls capture 4×2 title
DES MOINES – There was no stopping the Bishop Garrigan girls’ 4×200 squad in its pursuit of gold Friday at the Class 1A state track meet.
Behind a new school record clocking of 1:46.84, the Golden Bear quartet of junior Taylor Frideres, sophomore Johanna Vaske, senior Aisha Miller and senior Nicole Behr improved on their fourth-place state showing from a year ago. Wapsie Valley (1:47.61) was next in line.
“It was pretty crazy that we were able to win it,” said Miller, who ran the second leg on the 4×200 here last spring. “We were third coming in, and we didn’t know if (a title) was possible. I can’t believe it happened.
“It was just an awesome feeling.”
Behr echoed those thoughts.
“Once Aisha came in, I knew I had to give it everything I had,” Behr said. “You’re always going to feel the nerves down (at state), which I guess just gives you some more adrenaline.”
Despite taking the baton in last place, senior standout Tiffany Christensen anchored the Eagles to a runner-up (4:13.16) effort in the 2A distance medley. Christensen’s 2:11.04 on the final leg was a personal best by four seconds.
“I was really excited about my time,” said Christensen, a Wichita State University recruit. “We had the fastest time (4:23.10) on Quik Stats, but we had bad handoffs at districts, which really hurt us (Eagle Grove ran a 4:31.67 at districts).
“I don’t get as nervous at state anymore. I’m a lot more confident now.”
Rounding out the Eagle foursome was the sophomore trio of Madison Anderson, Aja Bell and Sam Helmke. Cascade (4:12.44) took home top honors.
Christensen will now compete in both the 800 and 1500 today.
