Once diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, Alyce Charlotte Handeland never lost her sweetness and kindness. She never complained, and maintained a kindness for her family, friends, and caregivers at the Marian Home. Alyce passed away peacefully in her sleep on Monday evening, May 19, 2014 at the age of 84.

Alyce was born on the farm on November 17, 1929 near Gowrie, Iowa and was the third daughter to Fred and Lillian Swan. She graduated from Gowrie High School in 1949 and moved to Fort Dodge. She met and married Sherwood “Andy” Handeland on Sept. 8, 1957 where they made their home and business in Fort Dodge. They introduced a daughter Nancy Handeland, of Seattle, WA and Steven (Kim) Handeland of Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Alyce’s life centered around her family and her church life at St. Olaf Lutheran. She served on various committees including the funeral committee.

Before her illness, Alyce led a quiet life, always having a special place in her heart for farm life.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her two sisters Vera and Gladys, and her husband. She is survived by her beloved sister, Beatrice Piper of Fort Dodge, her two children, and grandchildren, Ashely, Nicholas, and Austin. Scattered about the country are beloved nieces and nephews.

Alyce’s victory over death will be celebrated on Tuesday, May 27, at St. Olaf Lutheran. Public visitation is from 12 noon to 1:00 p.m. and services start at 1:30 p.m. at St Olaf. Memorials can be directed to the Alzheimer’s Society. Arrangements have been entrusted to Gunderson Funeral Home & Cremation Services.

Alyce will be remembered for her beautiful, sweet smile.
