Gaels earn sectional crown
LAKE CITY – St. Edmond’s Eddie Doyle didn’t let a disappointing North Central Conference meet hold him down long.
The Gael senior shot a blistering three-under par 69 as St. Edmond secured a sectional title on Friday at the Lakeside Country Club.
“Eddie had a terrific round,” said St. Edmond head coach Dan Streit. “He’s getting into a groove at the right time.”
St. Edmond carded a team score of 311, which was best in Class 2A, topping East Sac County (317). South Central Calhoun (335) also advanced as a team with their third-place showing.
Doyle’s 69 was the best in the state regardless of class. He had six birdies.
The Gael senior shot a one-over par 37 on the first nine, then recovered on the second nine with four birdies for a four-under par 32.
Doyle had signed an incorrect scorecard at the NCC?meet and was rendered a non-counter.
Michael Faiferlick had a big day for the Gaels as well, shooting a 77.
“Michael had a good round,” Streit said. “He had one bad hole with a triple-bogey on a par-3, but outside of that, he was very solid.”
Robert Flattery (71) and Harrison Mayer (84) were the other counters for the Gaels. Also competing for St. Edmond were Charlie Doyle (85) and Cal Coleman (90).
The Gaels were one of four North Central Conference teams to win sectional titles on Friday. Webster City, Humboldt and Clear Lake were also champions. The Lynx shot a state-best 299.
“Every year, the NCC is strong top to bottom,” Streit said. “It helps us prepare for sectionals and districts when you’re playing against top competition day in and day out.”
East Sac County’s Justin Kraft (74) was the meet runner-up. Also counting for the Raiders were Reed Tellinghuisen (82) and Austin Brown (83).
The Titans advanced with counting scores from Cyle King (78), Kerry McCarter (84), Conner Ludwig 86 and Colin Carlson 87.
The qualifiers will compete at the Lake Creek Country Club in Storm Lake on Friday. Tee time is set for 10 a.m.
