Tritons top Kirkwood

– Fighting off elimination once again, the third-seeded Iowa Central baseball team ousted No. 4 seed Kirkwood by a 6-1 final in the consolation bracket of the Region XI Div. II Tournament on Saturday morning.

The 17th-ranked Tritons (38-18 overall) plated one run in the third inning and five more in the sixth.

Tyler Franko, a No. 7 batter in the order, went 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored for Iowa Central. Tanner Buenting, Indiana State signee Andy DeJesus, Jason Galeano, Nate Steger and Justin Smith all added one hit for the Tritons, who prevailed despite stranding 11 baserunners. Buenting and Galeano each drove in a pair, while Smith contributed one RBI.

Going the distance on the mound was Alex Hayden, who surrendered five hits and no earned runs. Hayden walked one and fanned six.

Iowa Central was in the middle of its game against sixth-seeded NIACC (23-30) at press time last evening. The Tritons suffered a 9-6 setback to the Trojans in their tournament opener on Thursday.
