Triton men advance to nationals in golf

PANORA – The Iowa Central men’s golf team won its first Region XI championship under head coach David Barwin this past weekend at the Lake Panorama Golf Club.

The Tritons and Des Moines Area both shot 313s in the opening round. Iowa Central then carded a 321 on Day 2 for a winning 634 total.

Iowa Lakes (641) placed second, followed by Kirkwood (643), North Iowa Area (646), Des Moines Area (647), Northeast Nebraska (651) and Southwestern (743).

Ben Hogan (73-79-152), Matt Sturgill (75-77-152), Cody Brandau (81-79-160), Brenton Pohlman (84-86-170) and Jon Smiley (84-96-180) all competed for the Tritons. Sturgill won a tiebreaker over Hogan for individual runner-up honors, while Brandau checked in seventh overall.

Kirkwood’s Nathan Chilcott (76-73-149) was meet medalist.

“We really played well given the wind, and I could not be more proud,” said Barwin, who is in his fifth season at the helm. “We were so mentally tough and confident in both rounds. Ben and Matt anchored us down, Cody was a leader having played at Nationals last year, and Brenton and Jon each produced what was needed out of our four and five spots.”

This season’s trip to nationals will be the fifth in program history for Iowa Central.

Nationals are set for May 19-23 at Swan Lake Resort in Plymouth, Ind.

“This team is a special group and really believes in each other,” Barwin said. “You could see it both days that they knew they had (a regional title). I am really looking forward to them playing at the National Tournament and seeing where we stack up.”
