Carol J. Johannsen, 69, of Lakefield, MN, formerly of Fort Dodge, IA, passed away on Wednesday, April 30, 2014 at Colonial Manor Nursing Home in Lakefield. A funeral service for Carol will be held on Saturday, May 3, 2014 at 11 a.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Lakefield. A visitation will be held on Saturday one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will take place at Immanuel Cemetery following the service.

Carol Jean Johannsen was born on August 8, 1944 in Jackson, Minnesota to Carl A. and Florence A. (Schultz) Johannsen. She was baptized on September 10, 1944 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Lakefield, Minnesota. She grew up in Lakefield, where she attended Immanuel Lutheran Parochial Grade School. She was confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church on May 25, 1958. She graduated from Lakefield High School in 1962. She then attended Buena Vista College in Storm Lake, Iowa, where she graduated in 1966 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education, and a minor in Art.

After her graduation from Buena Vista, Carol taught one year of art in Storm Lake. She then taught second grade in Hartley, for three years, and then moved to Fort Dodge, where she taught second grade. During this time, she earned her Master’s Degree from Drake University, and became the elementary principal at Badger Elementary School. When that school closed, she became an elementary principal at Otho Elementary School. When that school closed, she became an elementary principal in Fort Dodge, also she was the reading coordinator and was in charge of the Title 1 reading program, continuing in that capacity until she retired in 2004.

Carol never married, but devoted her life to her students and teaching. Carol was a talented painter and decorator. She also loved antiques and collected many for her home.

In 2008, Carol was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease and entered Valley View Assisted Living in Lakefield, MN. She resided there until 2013 when she entered Colonial Manor Nursing Home in Lakefield.

Carol is survived by her sister Joann Kocak of Buffalo, MN; a brother Eugene (Mary) Johannsen of Lawrenceburg, IN; four nieces: Michelle Kocak Jones, Julie Mooney, Ann Robben, and Kristin Johannsen and their families; along with ten cousins and many friends.

She is preceded in death by her parents, a brother-in-law Steve Kocak, a niece Holly Johannsen, aunts, uncles, and a cousin.

Memorials are preferred to Alzheimer’s Association, or the donor’s choice.
