Dodger soccer loses at home

If Pablo Rodriguez didn’t see all the perfectly-timed passes and well-executed plays in practice, he wouldn’t be so upset by not seeing them come game time.

But, the Fort Dodge boys head coach is seeing just that, and it’s frustrating him.

The Dodgers dropped a 2-0 decision to No. 15 (Class 3A) Waukee Tuesday night, allowing two second half goals to get through.

Fort Dodge (2-7 overall) has now dropped seven in a row after opening the year 2-0, and has scored just four goals on the season.

“It’s extremely frustrating to see us making the mistakes we are because we are better than this,” Rodriguez said. “We are better than the results we’ve been getting and we need to look inside ourselves and figure out what we are going to do about it.

“The guys need to come together and become one or we aren’t going to accomplish our goals.”

Adam Bahnsen scored the first goal for the Warriors (9-2) in the 65th minute, while Isaac Bruns added an insurance goal with just a couple minutes to play. Bruns now has six goals on the year, while Bahnsen has five.

“You can only ask so much of your defense,” Rodriguez said. “They did an excellent job, but over the course of an entire game, you are going to have goals get past you. Our guys have to do a better job of playing our game and doing what we are coaching them.

“If we don’t do that, it’s going to be an early exit to our season come substate.”

Fort Dodge had just one shot on goal, compared to 10 by Waukee. The Warriors have scored 27 goals on the year.

Ethan Schwendeman recorded five saves. Dodger freshman Cole Allison had a chance in the 75th minute to punch a goal through, but the Waukee keeper Noah Jackson made the save.

Waukee is a two-time state champion and four-time state qualifier. They have won the last five meetings with the Dodgers by a combined score of 28-1.

Fort Dodge returns to action on Friday when they host Marshalltown at Dodger Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.

The Warriors won the junior varsity game, 1-0.
