Algona, Prairie Valley capture titles
POCAHONTAS – The Algona and Prairie Valley girls track teams picked up titles here at the Pocahontas Area Relays Tuesday.
The Bulldogs claimed the Class A field title with 137 points, three ahead of the host Indians. Humboldt was third with 131, followed by Sioux Central, Emmetsburg and St. Edmond.
Algona won five relay events, taking titles in the 4×100, 4×200, 4×400, 4×800 and shuttle hurdle relays.
The 4×100 of Sami Grein, Courtney Groen, Rachel Stein and Ali Grein clocked a time of 52.37; the 4×200 of Courtney Groen, Gabby Holmes, Alli Brown and Ali Grein went 1:52.16; Tatum Meyer, Megann Schmidt, Tangy Wiseman and Holmes ran the 4×400 in 4;16.55; Meyer, Anna Zeller, Schmidt and Wiseman went 10:07.96 in the 4×800; and the hurdle relay of Jacey Thompson, Reba Zeller, Holmes and Ali Grein clocked a time of 1:10.77.
Humboldt’s titles came in the 200 courtesy of Beth Duffield (27.14), 800 from Maddie Kampen (2:28.71), 1500 and 3000 by Sam Larson (5:15.17; 10:59.41) and the sprint medley of Caitlyn Wadsley, Kessa Kuyper, Kampen and Duffield (1:59.35).
St. Edmond’s Megan Flattery won the 400 in 1:02.32, just edging out Kampen. Flattery also finished tied for first in the high jump, but lost out on attempts to Sioux Central’s Nicole Hamilton. Both cleared 4-10.
“Megan did well in the 400,” SEHS head coach Liz Flattery said. “We continue to see improvements and the girls ran hard. We’re still missing a few and that is making it hard to get on track.”
Macey Bales won the shot put with a throw of 40-2 for the Indians, who also claimed the distance medley in 4:36.03. Emmetsburg’s Kayla Joyce and Bales tied in the discus after throws of 102-4, with Joyce earning gold and Bales silver.
In Class B, the Warriors racked up 164 points to best Marcus-MMC. Manson Northwest Webster was third, followed by Alta/Aurelia, Laurens-Marathon and Newell-Fonda.
Winning titles for Prairie Valley was Erica Rittgers in the 200 (28.00), Natalie Lambert in both the 100 hurdles (16.68) and 400-hurdles (1:09.69) and Clara Pearson in the long jump (15-5).
The Warriors also claimed the 4×400 with a time of 4:22.90. Lambert, Zoe Schneider, Angela Dopita and Rittgers comprised the quartet.
Manson NW had event victories from Ellie Herzberg (100, 12.46; 400, 1:00.44), the 4×100 relay of Kim Hokinson, Herzberg, Michelle Dolder and Cloie Herzberg (51.77) and the 4×200 of Hokinson, Breena Wignall, Kourtney Condon and Cloie Herzberg (1:53.90).
Laurens-Marathon won the sprint medley relay (Briley Sullivan, Destini Oehlertz, Allison Hofmaster, Brooke Runneberg; 2:00.94) and shuttle hurdle relay (1:22.23), while Runneberg won the high jump (5-5) and Kenzie Sullivan doubled-up in the shot put (36-5) and discus (106-9).
