HUMBOLDT – Evelyn Josephine Hovland, 95, of Humboldt, passed away Monday, April 21, 2014, at Humboldt County Memorial Hospital in Humboldt. Her funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Ullensvang Lutheran Church in Thor, Reverend Darryl Landsverk officiating. Friends may call at the church from 10 to 11 a.m. on Friday. Burial will be at Clinton Garfield Cemetery in Rolfe.
Evelyn Josephine Tscherter was born January 27, 1919 at Heron Lake, MN to Julius and Talka Kramer Tscherter. She attended Bingham Lake schools and was confirmed at the Lutheran Church in Windom, MN.
In 1936, Evelyn’s family moved to Palmer, IA, where she graduated from Palmer High School in 1938. She worked at the Tierney Cafe and the Union Transfer Co. in Fort Dodge. Evelyn joined the WAC in 1945 and worked at the Army Hospital in Clinton, GA, attaining the rank of Tech 5. Following her honorable discharge, she worked at the Girard Grocery in Rolfe. Evelyn was united in marriage to Richard Hovland on December 28, 1947 in Rolfe. They farmed near Thor for over 50 years during which time they were members of Ullensvang Lutheran Church, holding various positions throughout the years. One of Evelyn’s pursuits was making quilts, which she did for church and home, especially for her children and grandchildren.
Remaining to cherish her memory are her children Dennis Hovland of Thor, Diane Loftus of North Augusta, SC, and Mary Jo Thompson of Olivia, MN; eight grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren. Preceding Evelyn in death were her parents, husband Richard, daughter Becky, seven brothers, and four sisters.
