Tritons lose twice

Things didn’t go as planned for the Iowa Central softball team here Friday.

Unable to stay on the winning track, the Tritons (36-11 overall, 15-5 in the league) were swept by 13th-ranked (NJCAA Div. II) Des Moines Area in an ICCAC doubleheader at Rogers Sports Complex.

Following a 5-4 eight-inning setback in Game 1, Iowa Central was blanked by a 10-0 five-inning decision in the second contest.

“The good thing was (the sweep) happened (Friday) and not two weeks from now,” said ICCC head coach Josh Sandin said. “We have to use this as a learning moment. It would’ve been nice to possibly go into the regional tournament on a 21-game (conference) winning streak, but at least we still have 10 more games left.”

Despite leading 3-1 in the seventh inning of the opener, the Tritons saw the Bears (28-10, 14-6) rally back with three runs behind four straight two-out hits.

“Once their leadoff hitter (Kaitlin Briley) gave (DMACC) the lead, we came right back to tie the game,” Sandin said. “They scored an unearned run then in the eighth. We came up with the top of the lineup in the bottom of the inning, but we couldn’t get the job done with the wind blowing out. We also left the bases loaded in the third and fourth innings when we had a chance to bury them.”

Sammie Hildreth, Haley Rustvold (Fort Dodge) and Allie Ingalls (North Union) each tallied two hits for Iowa Central, which entered the doubleheader with 11 straight victories. Ingalls also drove in a pair, while Katie Newbury scored twice.

Briley finished 2-for-4 offensively, including a longball, three RBI and a run scored.

In the nightcap, the Tritons never threatened after allowing a five-spot in the first. Rustvold and Ingalls accounted for Iowa Central’s lone hits.
