Dobernecker ties HR mark
MASON CITY – Staying on a roll, the Iowa Central softball team swept an ICCAC doubleheader from North Iowa Area on Wednesday.
Following a 5-1 victory in their opener, the Tritons (36-9 overall, 15-3 in the league) cruised to an 11-0 triumph in the nightcap.
Emilee Dorpinghaus and Katie Newbury each went 2-for-4 offensively for Iowa Central in Game 1. Dorpinghaus also scored twice and drove in one, while Taylor Barnett crossed the dish twice. Sammie Hildreth added a triple and two RBI.
“There was an oppressive wind blowing straight in from left field at about 40 miles per hour, so it was just a miserable day,” said ICCC head coach Josh Sandin. “I was glad we won the first game without hitting a home run. It was nice to see us manufacture some runs.”
Allie Ingalls (17-5) went the distance in the circle for the Tritons, scattering four hits and one earned run. Ingalls walked six and fanned 11.
In the five-inning second contest, Iowa Central received home runs from Casey-May Huff, Dorpinghaus, Nicole Dobernecker and Ingalls. The Tritons erupted for nine of their scores in the fifth inning alone.
Dobernecker’s longball was her 19th of the year, tying Megan Risetter (Fort Dodge) for the single-season program record.
Carmen Rivera (9-3) picked up the complete game victory, allowing only three hits and no earned runs. She walked four with eight strikeouts.
Iowa Central outhit the Trojans (10-14, 2-12) in the twinbill, 22-7. The Tritons committed just one error compared to 10 for NIACC.
Winners of 11 straight games, Iowa Central hosts 13th-ranked (NJCAA Div. II) Des Moines Area in a showdown on Friday. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. The Bears were swept at No. 4 and league-leading Kirkwood on Wednesday by scores of 3-2 and 9-5.
“Those games Friday are pretty big,” Sandin said. We’ve definitely locked in at least the No. 2 seed (for the regional tournament), but we still control our own destiny with the tiebreaker over Kirkwood. We just have to take things one game at a time.”
