Tritons brave elements to host golf meet
Despite less than ideal conditions, the Iowa Central Open took place at the Fort Dodge Country Club on Tuesday.
Both the Triton men and women finished second to Des Moines Area, while Ben Hogan placed fifth overall individually.
The Iowa Central men carded a 309, which was 12 strokes behind DMACC. Matt Gute and Hunter VanVeen each led the Bears at 73, tying for second.
North Iowa Area’s Levi Fink shot a one-over par 71 to claim meet-medalist honors.
Cody Brandau added a 76 for the Tritons, followed by a 78 from Matt Sturgill. Cole Lowary had an 81 and Jon Smiley an 85 for Iowa Central.
“We played well,” ICCC head coach David Barwin said. “The men were just a few shots away from breaking 300 again. We need to get more consistent on the greens.”
The Tritons finished tied with DMACC atop the scoreboard, but the Bears won the title on the tiebreaker.
Taylor McGoldrick’s 88 paced Iowa Central, while Courtney Thrams was right behind with an 89.
Meg DeHaven carded a 90 and Sarah Crafton a 95 to round out the Iowa Central scorers.
“The women put together a complete round as a team and gained a lot of confidence,” Barwin said. “I like where we are heading into this weekend.”
DMACC’s Jalyn Briley was the meet-medalist with an 81, besting teammate and former Bishop Garrigan standout Haley Froehlich on the tiebreaker.
The Tritons return to action this Thursday at the Grand View Invitational in Ankeny at Otter Creek.
