Gael boys thinking big on the links

The St. Edmond boys golf team got a feel for what it will take to compete against the best Class 2A has to offer last spring.

Now, behind returning fourth-place state finisher Eddie Doyle, the Gaels look to build on that successful run.

Last year, St. Edmond finished sixth overall at state, with Doyle carding the low score of the two-round event.

Of the six golfers who competed at state, all but David Flattery return. Michael Faiferlick, Harrison Mayer, Cal Coleman and Robert Flattery were regulars a season ago.

“We have a lot of experience coming back and we are expecting that to provide us with another strong season,” SEHS head coach Dan Streit said. “The kids realize what it takes to get to the state tournament and they want to get back.”

Doyle and Faiferlick played on the Iowa Junior PGA circuit this past summer, with Doyle collecting three tournament titles and placing 13th overall at the Junior Tour Championship.

Faiferlick played in 16 tournaments, scoring three straight second-place finishes and winding up in a tie for fifth at the Junior Tour Championship. He also had two third-place showings.

For his career, Doyle, a senior, is a three-time all-North Central Conference finisher. He won the CYO title as a junior.

“Eddie and Michael both played really well in those junior tournaments over the summer,” Streit said. “In fact, all of these guys played a lot over the summer.”

Streit sees the North Central Conference as another “very tough grind” for his squad, but added that “we look forward to playing against those opponents.”

Clear Lake placed third in 3A last spring, led by junior Dane Waldron, who was tied with three others for the low score at state.

Outside of the NCC, St. Edmond will also have a dual with South Hamilton, which placed third in 2A as a team last season and returns four members from that group.

The Gaels host Webster City to start the year today, and will also host the CYO meet on April 30. The NCC competition is set for May 12 in Webster City.

Districts are May 16.
