ICCC Rec Center getting new floor
Iowa Central Community College’s rec center, located in its career education building, is getting a new gym floor.
The college’s board of directors approved at their monthly meeting Tuesday installation of the new athletic floor from Kiefer USA of Lindenhurst, Ill., at a cost of $235,990.
Dan Kinney, Iowa Central president, said the gym’s current plastic-based floor needs to be replaced.
“It’s a sport court floor that needs a lot of work. It’s in pretty bad shape,” he said. “It’s starting to curl up.”
The floor has been causing injuries, Kinney said, and he has received several comments from Iowa Central’s student senate members on the issue.
The new, rubber-based athletic flooring, dark grey on court surfaces and blue on surrounding areas, will be an improvement, he said.
“It’s good for recreation, but also for athletic programs,” he said.”It’s easier on the legs. It’s easier to clean. And it’s a nice surface for our track team.”
According to Angie Martin, Iowa Central vice president of business affairs, the new floor will expand beyond the gym itself.
“We’re proposing to put it in the hallway,” she said. “We like to use every bit of space.”
Martin said the new floor should still appear to be in excellent condition even after 13 years of use, and is easy to clean.
“You vacuum it, like you would a carpet,” she said. “I think it’ll be really good for our students.”
Kiefer USA, which also worked on the college’s weight room, will install the new gym floor in June, and is expected to be completed before the start of state softball.
